I always find psychology and counselling fascinating, and for so many years, I became the 'counsellor friend' in impromptu counselling sessions with my friends. During my studies, I was intrigued by the topics of Social Psychology - it covers a great deal of research on how people behave in social situations. I perceive that human beings tend to look for confirmation on the things they already believe. At the same time, the presence of other human beings can have powerful impacts on their behaviours. My work with the crisis hotline made me realise that people do not have to suffer alone. They have to be encouraged to reach out, to get help, to be heard. Every caller has a unique set of challenges they are facing, and some prefer to stay silent, but they are crashing inside. For me, it is important to provide psychological first aid and emotional support, with unconditional regard. I see the highest potential of people, and I believe that after a crisis, people do become more robust as they cope better than they previously thought.
Therapy is a process of growth and self-discovery, and in my sessions, I promote behavioural transformation by encouraging a positive outlook and the adoption of new attitudes and reactions. My therapy sessions are designed to dissect personal issues and provide clients with useful tools to help them see the glass half full instead of half empty. I require my clients, together with me, to explore their needs and concerns. I also prepare customised worksheets that clients can use for self-therapy.
My available session times are on weekday nights (7 pm to 11 pm) or the weekends (9 am to 11 pm) - UTC +8, SGT. Note that at the moment, I do not offer face-to-face sessions. However, research suggests that online therapy can result in client satisfaction and the quality of the client-therapist relationship is similar to levels of satisfaction with face-to-face therapy. I offer a 20 mins free initial consultation if the client wishes. The purpose of this free initial consultation is to introduce myself, to get to know potential clients, to build rapport and to understand the (gist of) needs and concerns. If the client is comfortable, then we can arrange for full sessions.
